Well, we were hoping that we would have to load this page with news from the Leafs at the trade deadline, but unfortunatly that is not the case. The Leafs fell short of acquiring both Keith Tkachuk and Eric Lindros, even though Pat Quinn raised the bar in the trade and made a better offer which was again turned down by everyone's favourite person, Bob Clark. The leafs got one deal done and here are the details...
To your left is the lone player the Maple Leafs aquired this trade deadline, left handed defenceman Aki Berg. Berg is a former 3rd overall draft pick, but has yet to grow to his potential in the NHL. Berg is a very big man and likes to throw the body around at times, but will only fight if he has to. He was having a hard time getting ice time in Los Angeles where he was a healthy scratch a number of games. Pat Quinn insists that Berg can still reach the potential that was expected of him, and we all hope he does. So, the Leafs got Aki Berg from L.A. and going in the other direction were promising young forward Adam Mair and a 2nd round draft pick. Was it worth it? We'll have to wait and see...
Pat Quinn stated before the trade deadline that the roster would not change. He didn't change the active roster, but he did take from the farm team. In my opinion Pat Quinn should have at least made 1 deal that would have brought a veteran defenceman onto the team. Only time will tell whether or not Pat Quinn was smart in not taking the risk of a player such as Eric Lindros, and the playoffs are that time.
Heard Around The League
Around the league the big news was the Tkachuk trade to St. Louis. St. Louis had to give up a package of young talent including Michal Handzus.
Donald Audette ended up back in Buffalo, for the rights to Kamil Piros and a fourth round pick.
The Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitols made quite a large deal. Montreal sent Trevor Linden, Dainius Zubrus, and a second round pick to Washington for Richard Zednik, Jan Bulis and a first round pick.
Calgary made a rather surprising move in trading Cory Stillman to the Blues for Craig Conroy. The fans in Calgary aren't liking this one...
Ottawa aquired Mike Sillinger from the Panthers in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2001 or 2002 entry draft.
